Students have been given the project of producing a two page (excluding cover page and bibliography) research paper on the Saint whose name they are taking for confirmation. Details of the format are available on the Task page.
There are several ways to approach the research aspect of this assignment. Some candidates might already have a name in mind, and may simply want to select from the various Saints with that first name. Other candidates might want to browse through the various Patron Saints to see if there is one that matches an interest, occupation, country, cause, or even illness. It is also possible some candidates have a short list of acceptable names and want to pick the one whose Saint most closely matches their interests. Whatever the approach to selecting a saint, some research may be needed before the selection is made.
By visiting the online sites listed in the Resource page of this WebQuest, students can select a saint and begin to accumulate the research needed for their projects. Some Saints may be easier to research than others. Saints who lived during the past 200 years tend to have more information about them available, often with biographies and sometimes autobiographies. Saints who lived when the New Testament was written will sometimes be mentioned in the gospels, Acts of the Apostles, or Epistles. The Resource page includes links to searchable Bibles.
Students should be careful to document their sources for use in the bibliography. It is a good idea to make the bibliography entry immediately after determining that a source will be used. The Resource page includes online sites for creating a proper bibliography. Links to Westchester County's libraries are included as well. Typically a local public library can borrow a book from another county library. Ask the librarian for help. Students may also decide to purchase book(s) on their Saints, either online or at a local bookstore. The best approach would typically be to include a combination of online and print (books, journal articles, et cetera) resources.
Students wanting to capture Internet graphics should have permission of the site owner first. Permission has already been granted from the owner of Patron Saints Index. The easiest way to copy the image into your report is to use Microsoft Internet Explorer. To do this, right click on the image (that is, use the right mouse button instead of the left), then select copy. In your research paper, place your cursor at the location where you want to use the image, and paste it.
To make a copy of an image file on the Internet, right click on the image (that is, use the right mouse button instead of the left) to get a menu.
When using Microsoft Internet Explorer, choose "Save Picture As".
When using Netscape Navigator, choose "Save Image As".
Use the dialogue box to select a location for saving the file. When using a computer at home, it is a good idea to save the image file in the same location as the research paper. When using a library computer, the image can be saved on a diskette. The Internet page from which the image came should be included in the bibliography.
The first page of the research paper summarizes the life of the Saint. Be sure to include an introductory paragraph, and concluding paragraph, and intermediate paragraphs. The second page of the research paper includes a reason for choosing this Saint, how the Saint serves as a role model, and a personal prayer. Make sure the rational for choosing this Saint and the way this Saint serves as a role model should relate to the Saint's life. Examining the Evaluation page to learn how the paper will be graded should give some insight on what is expected.
